Instead of vacation, abroad Russians choose a vacation in the countryside – cottages. Russians are in no hurry to spend the May holidays abroad and buy building materials for their country houses. Such a conclusion was made by experts of the CRF Platform. Sales in the segment of goods for the country increased by 23% compared with last year. Why do Russians choose beds instead of airports?
Traditionally, May holidays for Russians are an extraordinary vacation. Some go abroad, someone to tour the Golden Ring, and others to the country to fry kebabs and weed beds. Real incomes of Russians have been falling for some year already. And in 2019, many changed the traditional plans for the May holidays in favour of country houses. More and more people have begun building on their sites, says Leonid Simakov, head of the public relations department at Platform OFD, Leonid Simakov: “Almost a fifth of the purchases were made in Moscow region. If we talk about the top regions of the cost of building materials, it is also Moscow, St. Petersburg, Samara region and Krasnoyarsk Territory. Most often they bought gypsum plaster, wood panels, cement, glue and various construction tools. We see in general that consumer demand is increasingly shifting towards practical groups of goods. Naturally, on the eve of the May holidays with the onset of the summer season, there is a growing interest in the construction sector”.
Experts explain the interest in dachas by the fact that the very format of country houses has changed a long time ago. Millennials perceive cottage as a second home. Panel-panel houses with the lack of communications and no one are interested in the size of “6 by 6”. People from cities want to have comfortable housing in the area with electricity, heating and security. This is no longer a dacha of the Soviet format, where people come to cook kebabs once a year. Now it is in fashion to plant trees, make flower beds, patios and even pools. And most importantly, maintaining such a farm is much cheaper than just flying abroad for just a week, says Yury Shalyganov, head of the Moscow regional regional branch of the Union of Gardeners of Russia: “Even in the Moscow region, where there is a high price tag, the maintenance of classic country houses within the garden partnership even taking into account security, public lighting, the salary of the chairman is somewhere from 7-6 thousand to 10-12 thousand per year. This is on average; I do not take any cottage villages, plus the electricity that people consumed. One bedroom apartment in Moscow - 4-5 thousand rubles per month. Quite a large number of people think to move and live year-round in the country”.
Tour operators also confirm that in recent years there are actually fewer tourists who leave for May holidays. And those who still go on a journey, save a lot. For example, make a choice in favour of travel in Russia. Tours within the country are on average 2 times cheaper than the same in Turkey, and almost three times as affordable as in Spain, said Sergey Romashkin, general director of the Dolphin travel company: “The May holidays are a somewhat problematic date for our tourists, because expenses are large, real incomes reduced, so they accumulate money for one big summer trip. New Year, May holidays, February 23 are the dates when there used to be a lot of tourists besides summer holidays, are now arriving in some kind of stagnation. The most popular destination is Turkey. After several years of dumping, the Turks raised prices for the May holidays by 15-20 percent, compared to the same period in 2018.
Until incomes start to grow, until people see a favourable financial outlook for themselves, they will reduce the number of trips”.
However, the more the salaries of Russians fall, the less often their trips become, even to the dacha. According to the Avito Real Estate portal, people started selling country houses in large quantities, including due to increased taxes. And if this is a trend, next year the Russians will spend the May holidays, caring a maximum of focus in the apartment.
