Russians have missed chocolate

The “Coffee with milk” index in February went up again after the January recession and reached 959 pp, which is 1.9% more than the previous figure. The annual growth of the index in the whole country was 4.5%. In the capital, the index of simple pleasures also showed an increase of 1.9% to a level of 1101 pp. For the year, the index in Moscow added 5.1%, which is almost equivalent to the accumulated inflation over the period. The main “culprit” of such a significant increase in the index in February was chocolate, which the Russians bought significantly more, even at a higher price.

The Russians did not have time to take a break from chocolate, eating up its reserves after the New Year holidays and thus refusing to buy it in January when in February the appetite for sweets broke out again. The “Coffee with Milk” index went up again, largely due to the increased demand for chocolate. Thus, according to the results of the last winter month, CSM received a value of 959 pp, which is 1.9% higher than a month earlier. Regarding February last year, the index of simple pleasures added 4.5%, not reaching the level of annual inflation of 5.2%.

“Russians do not deny themselves their favourite delicacies, and, in general, simple pleasures. Chocolate is still one of the universal gifts for Russians, - says the president of the research holding Romir, Andrei Milekhin. - In February, though with a different scale, but two holidays are celebrated at once - Valentine's Day and February 23. The closeness of the holiday of March 8 also affects gifts for which are also purchased in advance. From here and such splash of purchases of chocolate, despite its rise in price”.

So, indeed, the monthly growth of the “Coffee with Milk” index was possible due to the return of demand for chocolate. Over the month, it was purchased by 7% more households than in January, while it was bought by 11.5% more in volume and paid for it was 2.2% more expensive than a month earlier. Over the month, the penetration of coffee also increased - it was bought by 1.5% more families than in the first month of the year. And although on average, coffee fell slightly (-2.4%), the Russians bought it more in terms of volume (+3.5%). In February, milk increased in price by 1.2%, but the volume of its purchases decreased by -3.9%. Water also enjoyed less popularity than a month earlier. Even with a decrease in the price of it by -2% of bottled water, it was bought by -1.3% less.

Over the year, Russians increased the volume of coffee purchases by 7.7%, and chocolate - by 4.2%. True, the decline in the price of coffee in the year’s section by -2.2% slightly impaired the Index development dynamics. The price of chocolate for the year has not changed. Water (+7.4%) and milk (+10.4%) rose in price for the year, but consumers purchased them in smaller volumes - by -4.7% and -5.2%, respectively.

In Moscow, the “Coffee with Milk” index in February showed the same growth as in the whole country - 1.9%. Thus, the Index curve reached 1101 p.p. Over the year, CSM in the capital grew by 5.1%, which does not quite reach the level of inflation accumulated over the year.

The reasons for the growth of the capital index of simple pleasures also coincided with the all Russian trend - residents of the capital also bought significantly more chocolate in February, even at a price that grew on it. Thus, the penetration of chocolate for the month increased by 10%, the price - by 6.7% and the volume of purchases - by 3.4%. In February, Moscow residents also bought more in terms of water (+ 12%) and milk (+1.3%). Pumped only coffee - it was purchased at-3.7% less than a month earlier. At the same time, prices for coffee and milk rose by only one-tenth of a percent, and water fell by -7.4%.

The annual growth of index in Moscow was due to an increase in the volume of purchases of milk (+10%), water (+3.4%) and coffee (+2.5%), while prices for coffee (+0.5%) and chocolate (+2.8%) and milk (+4.5%). The reduction in the price of water in the context of the year (-0.4%) and the volume of purchases of chocolate (-3.9%) did not significantly slow down the index growth.

Earlier, the holding reported that after the New Year, the inhabitants of Russia began to save.

In addition, the average check went to growth.
